PA’s Charles in blog: ‘I want to play football again’

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles of Port Arthur took to his personal website Monday to write a blog about dealing with his latest knee injury that has kept him out for much of the season.
It was widely reported Charles had a chance to return to the Chiefs for the 17th and final week of the regular season following an operation on a torn meniscus in the middle of the season. Charles underwent the medical procedure by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., after making one carry against the New Orleans Saints in Week 7.
Charles, a 2005 Memorial graduate who played at the University of Texas, revealed he noticed a problem with his injured leg during practice leading up to the Saints game and decided to try and play.
“When it really got real was that next week,” Charles blogged. “I was at home playing with my daughter. She grabbed my leg and it locked up, just like it had at practice. At that point, I started thinking, ‘How am I going to go out on the field and play if I can’t even play with my kids?’ My daughter is four years old. If her grabbing my leg is going to cause it to lock up, imagine what would happen if a 300-pound dude fell on me.”
Charles then made the decision to have Andrews check out his injury. It was the second mishap Charles dealt with in 2016; he missed the first three weeks of the season while trying to come back from a torn ACL in the middle of the 2015 season.
Charles has not played since the Saints game and is on injured reserve.
A six- to seven-week recovery timetable from the operation, which Charles said was not major, gave him and the Chiefs hope he would return late in the season. Already on injured reserve, Charles was ruled out for the season in December.
Rotoworld reported Charles is owed a $3 million roster bonus but is a candidate for offseason release, which would save the Chiefs $7 million.
Charles blogged he doesn’t know what his future holds, but he wants to continue playing football. He also revealed he and his wife are expecting a baby boy.
“I was only 29 years old this season,” said Charles, who turned 30 on Dec. 27. “My goal right now is to just focus on the now and my rehab and let the rest sort itself out later.
“In the meantime, I tell all our fans: Don’t worry about me, I’m in good hands. Go Chiefs!”
Kansas City hosts Pittsburgh in the AFC divisional round at noon Sunday on NBC (KJAC-12.2).
