PREP ROUNDUP: Bulldogs win, tie to start girls soccer year

HUMBLE — The Nederland girls’ soccer team is off to a 1-0-1 start to the season after a tie and victory at the Humble Tournament.

The Bulldogs first tied Kingwood Park 0-0 Friday before defeating Goose Creek Memorial 2-0.

Haley Dugas and Meg Sheppard scored the goals for Nederland.

The Bulldogs face the winner of Splendora/Longview Pine Tree at 2:30 p.m. today, weather permitting.

PN-GROVES 1, FORT BEND ELKINS 1

WALLER — The Port Neches-Groves Indians played Fort Bend Elkins to a 1-1 tie Friday before the rest of the Waller Tournament was cancelled.

PNG (2-0-1) and Elkins both scored in the first half.

“We faced a good, physical team,” PNG coach Aimee Bates said. “Either team could have won. Our defense is clicking and all three matches in the tournament really tested us.”

Goalkeeper Libbie LeJeune had six saves Friday. Julian Flores scored the lone PNG goal.

BOYS SOCCER

BULLDOGS START SEASON 1-0-1

PORT NECHES — Nederland tied Lufkin Hudson Friday to start its portion of the Port Neches-Groves Kickoff Classic and later took down Crosby.

Hudson and Nederland finished at a 1-1 tie. Austin Rich assisted on Nederland’s goal that was put into the back of the net by Jace Edgar.

The game was called before the final whistle due to the weather.

Nederland then played another shortened game because of the rain but won this won, 2-0 against Crosby.

Edgar scored the first goal and the second came off the foot of Sal Contreras.

Nederland faces Houston Heights at 11:30 a.m. today.

CLEAR CREEK 5, PA MEMORIAL 3

PEARLAND — The Port Arthur Memorial Titans held a 3-2 lead in the second half against Clear Creek but then a costly injury helped fuel the win slip away.

Clear Creek went on to win 5-3 after Memorial’s goalkeeper had to leave the match at the Pearland-Pasadena Tournament.

Clear Creek held a 2-0 lead early in the match before Memorial made a comeback.

Lisandro Nunez assisted on the Titans’ first goal that was made by Roberto Guzman from 30 yards out.

Sergio Sanchez then scored off another assist by Nunez. Ricardo Monreal put in the Titans’ final goal off an assist by Sanchez.

Memorial is scheduled to face Pearland Dawson at 2 p.m. today.

PN-GROVES 2, HOUSTON HEIGHTS 0

PORT NECHES — The Port Neches-Groves Indians are off to a 3-0 start to the season after a 2-0 win over Houston Heights Friday at the PNG Kickoff Classic.

Preston Riggs and Gary VanHouten each scored for the Indians. Colton Stone assisted on Riggs’ score.

BOYS BASKETBALL

PA MEMORIAL 71, LUMBERTON 28

At Memorial, Tyler Guidry came within a rebound of a double-double, and the Titans (14-5, 2-1 in 22-5A) routed the Raiders in 22-5A play.

Guidry had 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Thailan Wesley added 14 points and a steal and Darion Chatman added seven points, three steals and three assists.

Memorial hosts Ozen on Tuesday.
