Top year for port highlighted by bond issue

To say the Port of Port Arthur accomplished much in 2016 may be an understatement.
In fact, John Comeaux, board of commissioners president of the Port of Port Arthur, said the port marked another successful year and looks forward to a bright 2017.
He cited a hallmark to the year involved the passage of an $89.95 million bond issue by voters in May.
“We appreciate the support of the local voters to help make our continued growth a reality,” Comeaux said. “The Port has announced a series of projects connected with the expansion and growth of the port.”
Among other projects, the bond issue supports a 600-foot berth expansion, to handle a variety of cargos and larger vessels.
“For 2016, we had a robust year for cargo. We are pleased with this year’s performance as our traditional forest products and project cargo movements remain strong. We are ending the year on a high note with a lot of vessel activity and local longshore jobs. Working closely with the Army, we are handling a significant volume of military equipment headed overseas.” Comeaux said.
Another accomplishment for the port and the community is the continued growth and success of Camp SeaPort, envisioned by Commissioner Linda Turner Spears.
In its 10th year and expanded now to two camps, the youth outreach program recently achieved its 501c3 charitable organization status.
“The designation will allow us to continue and hopefully expand the opportunity for local teens to explore maritime career opportunities. All in all we have been very blessed, a credit to fellow board members, staff, local labor, community and our customers,” Comeaux said.
