Jefferson County chase ends in Baytown shootout

A chase that began when Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop an SUV led law enforcement to Baytown and ended with the shooting death of the suspect on Tuesday.
Deputies attempted to stop a black Mercedes SUV traveling west on Interstate 10 at mile marker 840 for a traffic violation at 8:49 a.m. Nov. 22, according to a press release form the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect fled with deputies in pursuit into Chambers County. Chambers County sheriff’s deputies, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Baytown Police joined in the chase and a sheriff’s helicopter in the area on patrol was able to maintain communications during the pursuit.
When the pursuit entered Baytown, Baytown Police attempted to spike the vehicle at Garth and I-10. When police attempted to spike the vehicle, the suspect attempted to strike the officer.
The suspect wrecked his vehicle at Main and I-10 in Baytown.
The suspect then exchanged gunfire with several officers on scene including Jefferson County deputies. The suspect was struck and died from his injuries.
No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.
At this time law enforcement do not know why the driver fled and the incident is under investigation.
