PREP ROUNDUP: Nederland wins girls basketball opener

BEAUMONT — The Nederland Bulldogs made a winner of first-year coach Nicole Abercrombie in the team’s opening game of 2016.

Nederland defeated Kelly 36-13 behind seven points and four steals from Hayley McDaniel. Gabby Gaspard finished with six points.

Nederland participates in the Hardin-Jefferson Tournament starting Thursday.

PN-GROVES 47,

LC-MAURICEVILLE 31

LITTLE CYPRESS — The Port Neches-Groves Indians got nine points, seven rebounds, four steals and six blocks from Taylor Johnson as PNG defeated Little Cypress-Mauriceville 47-31 to open the season.

Tessah Miller had 11 points, four rebounds and three steals while Kandice Comeaux had seven points and four rebounds.

Khloe Droddy had 15 points, four rebounds and two steals and Chelsea Carrillo finished with five points and six rebounds.

PNG plays again in the Nederland Lady Dog Classic starting Nov. 17.

STERLING 35,

PA MEMORIAL 24

BAYTOWN — The Port Arthur Memorial Titans are off to a 0-2 start after Tuesday’s 35-24 loss to Baytown Sterling.

Memorial led 14-6 after the first quarter but only scored a point in the second to go up 15-13 at the break.

Sterling then came out of half time with a 20-point third quarter to lead 33-19 going into the fourth. Memorial won the fourth 4-2.

The Titans face Cleveland at home next Tuesday.

BOYS HOOPS

KELLY 68,

FALLBROOK 65

The Kelly Bulldogs are 2-0 on the season after a 68-65 victory over Houston Fallbrook.

Tevin Baker, a Port Arthur resident, led Kelly with 19 points and John Kraemer had 18.

Kelly trailed 34-32 at the break and then was behind 58-54 heading into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs outscored Fallbrook 14-7 in the final stanza.
