Director of golf John Allen made his final shot at Bayou Din one he will always remember.

Playing the the Bayou Back to wrap up a 27-hole day on Oct. 30, Allen slam dunked his second shot on the par-4, 18th from 124 yards with a pitching wedge. Allen, when he started the day, wasn’t thinking it would be his final round at the course which will be closing on Nov. 27.

After sinking the eagle, however, he knew it was the perfect way to say goodbye. The spectacular finish was witnessed by Rob Kistner. …

Unless somebody else makes one in the next three weeks, Mike Fertitta of Silsbee will have the distinction of scoring the last hole in one at Bayou Din. Fertitta, playing in the Port Neches Chamber of Commerce Scramble, sank his tee shot from 141 yards on the seventh hole of the Bayou Front. He used a pitching wedge.

The ace not only produced a special memory for Fertitta, it won him a set of TaylorMade Speedblade Irons. Witnesses were John Ceravolo and Jason Cline. …

Vietnam veteran Mike Lansford didn’t win any irons but he did celebrate a hole in one on the seventh hole at Babe Zaharias. Lansford swung a pithing wedge from 105 yards to bag his third ace and first one in 29 years. Witnesses were Ronnie LaSalle, Bill Hanley and Bob West. …

If there is an ideal place for Chris Stroud to get his PGA Tour career back on track it figures to be this week’s OHL Mayakoba Classic in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Stroud, who got in on a sponsor’s exemption, has three top-fives and a tie for 12th in nine starts in this event.

He finished fourth in 2011, T5 in 2012 and T3 in 2013. Stroud was T12 in 2008. In the 2011 tourney, the former Port Neches-Groves and Lamar star reeled off eight consecutive birdies in the second round — one short of the PGA Tour record — on the way to a 63. Stroud’s former Lamar teammate Shawn Stefani is also entered. …

Congratulations to Port Neches-Groves senior Karlei Hemler, who will sign to play college golf at McNeese State this afternoon. Hemler, who earlier had committed to Mary Hardin-Baylor, changed her mind to be closer to home and to play collegiately at a higher level.

The winner of the Babe Zaharias Female Player of the Year as a junior, she has been winning tournaments since her early days as junior player, is a two-time district champion, a three-time regional qualifer and has twice advanced to the state tournament. …

October was a strong month for the Lamar men’s golf team, with the Cardinals finishing first, third and seventh in three tournaments and Mans Berglund being named the Southland Conference Player of the Month. That followed Zander Gous being the SLC Player of the Month for September.

Berglund, in October, finished in the top five in all three tournaments in which LU played, including winning the Bayou City Collegiate. He also helped Lamar win the OGIO Utah Invitational. …

Cody Metts of Nederland, who has been an invaluable asset in the Babe Zaharias Golf Shop for nearly five years, will be ringing up his final sale on Friday. Metts, who is extremely well liked by those who play at The Babe, and who has become a pretty good player in his spare time, is leaving to take a higher-paying job at the Total refinery.

“I am going to really miss Cody,” said Zaharias head pro Ed Campbell. “He did a great job for us.” …

Teams captained by Javier Torres and Thad Borne won the Super Saturday 2-ball game at Zaharias. The foursome of Torres, Troy Touchet, Danny Harrington and Jerry May posted 7-under on the front. On the back, Borne, Harrell Guidry, Kenny Hacker, Don Duplan and Robert Lynch won with minus-4 . . .

In the Friday 2-ball game at Zaharias, the team of Benny Sharpe, Guidry, Bob Luttrell and Don Chandler won the front in minus-6. On the back, there was a tie at minus-4 between the foursome of Earl Richard, Bob Byerly, Tony Trevino and Brad Royer and the team of Mike Norris, Cecil Norris, Rick Pritchett and Ralph Childress. …

The Thursday Senior Plus 55 Game at The Babe was played in a 2-man, 9-9 best ball/scramble format. Cap Hollier-Guidry won First Flight with a 65, edging Bob Byerly-Larry Thompson by a stroke.

In Second Flight, Bobby Wactor-Raymond Darbonne scored a one-shot victory over Ed Holley-Bob Barnes with a 66. Charlie Leard-Pat Waite claimed Third Flight with a 70, edging Dillard Darbonne-Mike Hollier by two strokes. Jim Cooper-Dwayne Morrison won Fourth Flight by three strokes with a 75.

Closest to the pin winners were West (No. 2), Lansford (No. 7 with his ace), Hollier (No. 12) and Joe Gongora (No. 15).
