BOB WEST ON GOLF: Young shoots age after birdie barrage

Hearty congratulations to Paul Young of Groves for shooting his age on Monday at Babe Zaharias. Many golfers shoot their age these days but most of them are in their 70s or 80s. Young is only 67, so what he did was extra impressive.

Equally impressive was the fact he rolled in eight birdies on the way to shooting his 5-under-par round. Young’s strong showing helped his team that included Larry Stansbury, Jim Mercer and Charlie Perez win the front nine in the Monday Senior Plus Two-Ball Game at Zaharias. They finished minus-5.

Minus-5 was also the winning number on the back for the foursome of James Shipley, Cricket Owen, Dennis Frazier and Larry Rogers. …

In the Super Saturday Two Ball Game at The Babe, the team of Adam Noel, Jim Jordan and Jon Williams won the front in minus-5. On the back, the foursome of Cap Hollier, Gene Jones. Stansbury and Mike Hollier won with minus-5. …

The Friday Senior Game at Zaharias was also played in a two-ball format, with the team of Bob West, Don MacNeil, Billy Thillet and Roger Baumer winning the front with minus-5. Minus-7 was the winning score on the back for the team of Gary Whitfill, Larry Johnson, Ed Hetzel and Paul Duplantis. …

The Thursday Senior 55 Plus Game at Zaharias was played in a 6-6-6 format among flighted 2-man teams. The duo of James Shipley-Cricket Owen won First Flight with a 67, edging the teams of Mike Lansford-Jim Jordan, Noel-Hollier and Bob Byerly-Hollier ghost by one stroke.

In Second Flight, MacNeil-Pat Waite won with 70, besting Harry Green-Ray Gallier and Larry Foster-E.T. Robicheaux by three strokes. Dan Flood-Harold Wilkinson took Third Flight with a 79, edging Steadman Tahaney-Charlie Huckaby by two shots.

Closest to the pin winners were Pritchett (No. 2, No. 15), Ben Thornton (No. 7) and Robicheaux (No. 12). …

Seventeen points was a winner for the team of Cody Metts, Bill Morrow, Larry Reece and Robert Lynch in the Babe Zaharias DogFight. Finishing second with 16 points was the foursome of Pritchett, Gary Hanan, Jeff Rinehart and Wilkinson.

Closest to the pin winners were Hollier (No. 2), Ronnie LaSalle (No. 7), Morrow (No. 12) and John House (No. 15). …

Entries are still being taken for Saturday’s Friends of St. James fundraising golf tournament and dance. The golf tournament at Zaharias is a four-person scramble with an entry fee of $300 per team or $75 for
individuals. Play begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun.

Cost for a 10-person table for the 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. dance at Kirwin Hall is $300. It is not necessary to play in the tournament to attend the dance. All proceeds, including the sale of sponsorship, will go for facility upgrades for the iconic St. James Church that dates to the 1930s.

The St. Charles Church/Nederland Knights of Columbus is hosting a four-person scramble Saturday, Oct. 29 at Bayou Din. Entery fee is $40 per player. Golfers can enter as a single or put together their own four-player team.
