SABINE PASS — The Iola Bulldogs were in no mood to celebrate Sabine Pass’ winning streak. They just wanted to end it.
The Bulldogs scored a little more than 2 minutes into the game and hardly let up Friday, marching to a 57-14 win in District 12-2A Division II and ending the Sharks’ winning streak at five.
A win would have secured the Sharks’ first winning season since 1983, but they still have three more chances to accomplish that. They visit Hull-Daisetta next Friday, host Colmesneil at home on Oct. 28 and travel to Evadale on Nov. 4.
The Sharks, however, won’t have a losing record through the regular season.
Iola (4-3, 2-0 in 12-2A D-II) led 34-0 before Jamyus Jones caught a fourth-down pass in the end zone for a touchdown just before halftime. Jones rushed for 45 yards and D’Coven Turner picked up 25 more during that drive.
Sabine Pass’ only other score came with 30 seconds left in the game. That came after Brayden Miller forced and recovered a fumble.
The defeat is Sabine Pass’ worst of the season, but it came against a team that’s gone 24-7 since 2014, when the Bulldogs won the district championship. Sabine Pass had won three games by eight or fewer points and played four overtime periods heading into Friday’s game.
