HUNTSVILLE – Lamar freshman Elodie Chapelet earned medalist honors for the first time in her young career, helping the Cardinals to a second-place finish at the Bearkat Women’s Invitational hosted by Sam Houston State on Tuesday.

Chapelet fired a 3-under-par 68 on the 6,067-yard, par-71 layout at the Raven Nest Golf Club to finish at a tournament record 7-under-par 206 for 54 holes, two strokes better than Gianti Mahardhika of Sam Houston State, who fashioned a 66 on Tuesday to finish at 208.

Chapelet has posted top-five finishes in all three of her events this fall. She opened the season by finishing fourth at the Tignanelli Towson Invitational, tied for first at the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout before bowing to teammate Wenny Chang in a playoff, and now, earning medalist honors at the Bearkat Women’s Invitational.

Chapelet became the third Cardinal to earn medalist honors at the event, joining Therese Nilsson, who won the event in 2008, and Chang, who claimed the title in 2013 as a freshman.

As a team, LU finished nine strokes behind the host Bearkats. LU and Sam Houston State tied for the low team score of the day at 6-over-par 290. The Cardinals finished the tournament at 882, while the Bearkats posted a total of 873. Houston Baptist, the two-time defending champion of the event, placed third in the nine-team field at 893.

Chang, who was coming off her seventh career win with last week’s title at the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout, finished fifth at 4-over-par 217 after an even-par 71 on Tuesday. LU’s Olivia Le Roux tied for 11th at 9-over-par after her final round of 73.
