Former Nederland High goalkeeper Cory Speed was named head men’s soccer coach at Division III Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C.

Speed is now the 17th known head coach in program history, replacing current UNC Greensboro assistant Jeff Bateson, according to a news release.

Speed has coached in Divisions I, II and III, as well as the NAIA and high school ranks, posting a 55-39-13 career record with four winning seasons.

“Having spent time at ever division in the NCAA and NAIA, Division III provides the best college experience for student-athletes,” Speed said in the release. “Division III students are every bit as invested mentally and emotionally in the success of their programs, yet able to strike a better balance between academics, athletics and social life. I look forward to working at Guilford to elevate the Quakers into perennial men’s soccer contenders in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.”

He played collegiately at Sterling College in Kansas, where he was named honorable mention All-America and Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Goalie of the Year as a senior in 2007.

Speed also began his coaching career at Sterling in 2008. He was head coach at Hutto High in 2010 before joining the staff at Division II St. Edward’s University in Austin. He moved to the east coast in 2013 to join the staff at Roanoke College in Virginia and spent the 2015 season at Virginia Tech.

“We are really excited to have Cory as our head coach,” Guilford AD Tom Palombo said in the release. “He has a tremendous amount of energy and knowledge of the game. He’s a great fit for us at Guilford.”

Speed also coached club teams in Austin, Roanoke and Christiansburg, Va.

Guilford’s first game is Sept. 4 at home against Piedmont College.
