Additional information is coming to light regarding the fatal shooting of Shalala Sharelle Fletcher outside a Port Arthur convenience store over the weekend.

The shooter, whose name has not been released, is a former non-commissioned security guard at Lamar University. The man had submitted a letter of resignation to the department before the July 2 shooting. The ending of his employment at LU is not related to the incident and his reason for leaving is undisclosed, Brian Sattler, LU spokesman, said.

Duties of the security guard included overseeing the comings and goings at each of the residence halls, he said.

Security guards at LU do not carry firearms on duty.

The case remains under investigation and has not reached the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, Pat Knauth, first assistant district attorney, said.

It is unclear if or when the case will reach the DA’s office and Knauth spoke in general terms about shooting.

“When there is a shooting, it is our methodology to let the grand jury pass judgment on what occurred there,” Knauth said.

According to police, the security guard pulled into the Express Mart in the 2900 block of Jimmy Johnson Boulevard around 5:20 a.m. Saturday and saw two people run out of the store with beer, being chased by a store clerk. The suspected thieves ran to a car where Fletcher was a passenger.

The security guard said he tried to disable the car by shooting at the tires and one of the rounds hit and killed Fletcher.

The car went about a block to the Community Bank parking lot, 2901 Turtle Creek Drive, where it was abandoned, leaving behind Fletcher, who was dead. Police have not released the names of the other people in the car.

Police said the details and evidence of the incident will be turned over to the DA’s office.

KFDM.com reports that Fletcher has family in Texas and Louisiana and leaves behind two sons and a daughter.
