Nederland right tackle Corbin Smith expects to be headed to Rice by this time next year.

Smith on Thursday announced his verbal commitment to the Owls of Conference USA, becoming the second Mid-County player this week to publicly choose a program. Port Neches-Groves wide receiver Keynel McZeal on Sunday committed to Texas A&M.

Smith, at 6-feet-5 and 305 pounds, was heavily recruited by academic powerhouses Stanford, Northwestern, Purdue and Brigham Young. Now, Rice apparently has won the battle for Smith’s academic and football future.

“He has a nasty attitude about him,” Nederland coach Larry Neumann said in an October article. “He gets a fit on blocks, and he finishes them the right way. He’ll grind you. He likes to move a guy from point A to point B against his will.”

Smith led a line that produced three high-ranking players in District 22-5A categorical standings, running back and Lamar signee Austin Krautz, quarterback Michell LeBaron and wideout Dean Fisher. Nederland earned a share of its fifth straight 22-5A championship.
