BEAUMONT – Lamar junior Michael Feucht has proven himself to be the true definition of a student-athlete once again. For the second consecutive season Feucht has landed the league’s top academic honor being named Southland Conference’s Student-Athletic of the Year. The honor comes less than a month after he was named the conference’s player of the year for his accomplishments on the court.
Feucht is joined on the Southland’s All-Academic first team by classmates Juuso Laitinen and Nikita Lis.
A business major, Feucht was just as dominant in the classroom as he was on the court. A two-time Academic All-Southland selection, Feucht is maintaining better than a 3.5 grade point average in the classroom. He was an automatic selection after earning first-team all-conference honors on the court following the regular season.
Earlier this year, Feucht became just the third Cardinal in program history to be named Southland Player of the Year following a season that saw him finish among the league leaders with 14 singles wins, and 12 doubles wins (with teammate Benny Schweizer). Feucht and Schweizer pulled off one of the bigger upsets in conference history when they defeated the nation’s ninth-ranked team of Arjun Kadhe and Julian Cash from Oklahoma State.
Feucht was near perfect in Southland matches during the 2016 season posing a 4-0 mark in singles play, and a 3-1 (.750) record in doubles matches.
Dean’s List selections in the classroom, both Laitinen and Lis were stallwarts on the court. A second-team All-SLC singles selection on the court, Lis posted a 12-8 (.600) singles record, including a 4-1 (.800) league tally. He teamed up with Jeandre Hoogenboezem to record a 12-8 doubles record, and was a perfect 4-0 in conference matches to earn first-team all-league doubles honors.
