Southland honors Stockton as top golf student-athlete

BEAUMONT – Lamar senior Taylor Stockton was named the Southland Conference’s Student-Athlete of the Year for women’s golf, the conference announced Monday.

Stockton, a native of Clear Lake, becomes the fifth Lamar women’s golfer to be named student-athlete of the year, joining Casey Cain (2004, 2005), Therese Nilsson (2009), Stine Pederson (2011) and Kelly Erasmus (2015).

An accounting major with a 3.81 grade-point average, Stockton tied for third in the league championship while helping the Cardinals win their fourth consecutive team title. Stockton and averaged 75.72 strokes in 32 rounds. The first-team all-conference selection had five top-four finishes and seven top-eight finishes.

Stockton, the first women’s golfer to be a part of four Southland Conference championship squads, was a first-team All-Southland Conference selection this past season. Stockton was an all-conference performer for three seasons as a Cardinal.

It is also the third time Stockton was named to the conference’s all-academic team.

“Taylor was the heart and soul of this team,” LU coach Jessica Steward said. “Her success on the course and in the classroom is tremendous. I am so proud of her and so happy that she is receiving this award.”

Stockton was joined on the conference’s all-academic team by LU sophomore Olivia Le Roux, who has a 4.00 GPA in chemistry. An honorable-mention all-conference selection this past season, Le Roux had four top-eight finishes, including three finishes in the top three.

“Olivia showed tremendous improvement this past year,” Steward said. “She has come so far, and I’m looking for great things from her next year. To maintain a 4.0 GPA while playing at the Division I level is incredible.”
