LAKE CHARLES — Lamar has reached the Southland Conference softball championship game for the first time in school history.

Following a semifinal loss with host and top seed McNeese State, third-seeded Lamar had to defeat Stephen F. Austin 5-3 on Friday to win the losers’ bracket of the conference tournament on Cowgirl Diamond. SFA, which was the No. 5 seed, defeated No. 2 seed Nicholls State 1-0 in an elimination game late Thursday.

Lamar scored twice in each of the first two innings. Stephanie Meeuwsen hammered her 13th career triple in the sixth inning to tie the school record set by Donna Dugas (1984-87).
