“Wake Up America,” National Day of Prayer set for Thursday

Communities across the area are set to recognize a National Day of Prayer on Thursday.
The theme this year, Wake Up America, “emphasizes the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to return to the God of our Fathers in reverence for His Holy Name,” according to the National Day of Prayer website.
Scripture chosen to represent the theme is taken from Isaiah 58:1 — “shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.”
Port Arthur Councilwoman Tiffany Hamilton and Constable Chris Bates are hosting one such ceremony at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, May 5 at the flag pole in front of city hall, 444 Fourth St.
Hamilton said all are welcome to attend and pastors from the Angelo, African American, Hispanic and Vietnamese communities have been invited.
“We believe in the power of prayer,” Hamilton said. “We’re excited about the growth in our community and want community involvement and are praying to help move us forward.”
Nederland will also join in the event with a ceremony to be held at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, May 5 at Nederland City Hall, 207 N. 12th St. All faiths are welcome.
Chris Duque, Nederland city manager, said church leaders of various denominations have been invited to participate. Church leaders who wish to participate but have not been contacted can contact the city at 723-1503.
“We stress that all faiths are welcome,” Duque said. “This is something we had in mind a few years ago and think it is good for our community.”
Employees with the city will be able to attend the event.
