Charley Roy, Sr.

Charley Roy, Sr. was born on October 1, 1927 in Big Cane, LA to the late Mary and Jesse Roy. He attended Spring Bluff Baptist Church and was baptized at an early age. While in Big Cane, LA he met his wife of 50 years, Olivia Parker, whom he would marry before moving to Texas in 1946. They became members of Shilo Baptist Church, where he faithfully serviced as deacon, member and past president of male chorus. Charley was part of the first African American quartet in Port Arthur, TX called The Wondering Gospel Singers, and he was one of the founding members of the Golden Triangle Voices of Brotherhood. Charley worked for Texaco refinery for 42 years before retiring.

He departed this life on April 19, 2016 at 9:30 am surrounded by family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Olivia Roy, daughter Helen Penigar, sons Charley Roy, Jr. and Michael Roy; brothers, Cliff Roy, Oliver Roy and Larry Roy; sisters, Dorothy Bradley, Lillie Mae Wiley, Lillie Mae Lewis, Mable Mae Roy, Willie Mae Hatch; grandsons John Lee Cole and Jermaine Isaac Kelly and granddaughter Aneita Joseph.

Charley leaves to cherish loving memories with his second wife Lottie Johnson Roy, Marco, Tasha and Aaron all of Beaumont, TX; daughters Verna Cole, Mary Roy, Ella Mae Thomas and Deborah Roy Francis all of Port Arthur, TX; sisters Malena Harper, Elvira (Charles) Phillips, Mary Louise King, Linda (Joseph) Guillory; brothers James (Tasha) Roy, Tommy (Letha) Roy, Wiery (Pearly) Roy; one brother-in-law, A.B. Bradley and two special friends Patrick Guidry and Robert Workman.

Charley also leaves 34 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

A wake will be from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2016 at Shilo Baptist Church, 1725 Bluebonnet Avenue, Port Arthur, TX. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with Rev. Samuel Joseph officiating. Burial will follow in Live Oak Cemetery under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.
