HOUSTON — The strong wind did not help Nederland’s girls soccer team at all at the start of Friday’s 5A area round game. Neither did the No. 6-ranked team in the class.
Fort Bend Ridge Point pitched a 6-0 shutout win at the Galena Park ISD Stadium to end Nederland’s season at 17-5-1. The Lady Panthers improved to 22-1.
“We were into the wind in the first half, and it was a really strong wind,” Nederland coach Keith Barrow said. “It was 2-0 at halftime. We were kind of on our heels the whole half, and hoping to get out [of the half] 0-0.”
Unfortunately for the Lady Bulldogs, Ridge Point was on point all game.
“We gave up two goals,” Barrow said. “One was a really good goal, the other on a corner kick. We just didn’t get the ball cleared, and they kicked it in.”
Barrow said the Lady Bulldogs tried to push the numbers forward and score one goal at a time. But the possession-oriented Lady Panthers succeeded at working the ball around and gave the Lady Dogs fits all night.
In fact, Ridge Point had 30 shots on goal to Nederland’s eight. Emma Roccaforte finished with 15 saves for Nederland.
