Numerous animals dead after fire at Humane Society center
BEAUMONT — Numerous animals are dead after a fire at the Humane Society of Southeast Texas Tuesday night.
Beaumont Fire rescue responded to the fire at the Humane Society center 2050 Spindletop Road in Beaumont, about 8:43 p.m., March 15 after a nearby resident saw flames coming from the building, according to a press release from the Beaumont Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived, flames were visible and there was heavy smoke coming from the building. Firefighters forced entry and were able to contain the fire to two rooms but there was heavy smoke damage throughout the building.
Firefighters began to bring animals out of the shelter as soon as possible. Shelter employees and volunteers on scene moved the live animals to a nearby building to treat them.
Several animals perished due to smoke conditions in the rooms near the fire origin. The fire originated in the laundry and was caused by a dryer.
James McNutt with Kinsel Ford has started a Fill A Ford 4 The Humane Society and is accepting donations, according to his Facebook post.
“We will try to fill the back of a Ford truck with dog and cat food, blankets, toys, food and water bowels, etc. Anything they might need to replace after last night’s (Tuesday) fire,” according to the post.
Persons wishing to help can stop by the dealership where there will be a clearly marked truck on the showroom floor to drop off the donation.
