Lamar State College-Port Arthur swept a doubleheader against Bossier Parish (Louisiana) Community College on Tuesday, 2-1 and 4-3, at Martin Field.
Both ends of the two-game set were thrillers for the Seahawks with the first game ending on a walk-off single by freshman Bailey Suza and the second game ending with a strong defensive stand by LSC-PA.
In Game 1, the Hawks held a 1-0 lead after the third inning when Sierra Miller doubled then scored on a line drive single to right field by Nicole Thorn. The game stayed that way until the top of the seventh inning when Bossier Parish tied the game. With go-ahead runners at second and third, Seahawks pitcher Rebecca Hernandez ended the threat with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the seventh, Suza picked up her RBI after Breyn Pulcher opened the inning with a double to center field.
Alexis Perez finished the game 2 for 2 with a walk, while Kayla Sheridan and McKenzie Andrus each also had a hit. Sheridan had a triple.
On the hill, Hernandez allowed four hits and one unearned run with four strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, the Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in the first when Sheridan was hit by a pitch, stole second base and then scored on a single to right field by Anessa Sanchez. Bossier Parish responded in the second to tie the game 1-1.
LSC-PA got back out front again in the second inning with two runs. Miller tripled to open the inning, then Pulcher followed with a walk. Thorn picked up the RBI on a sacrifice fly to plate Miller and move Pulcher to second. With two outs, Sheridan singled to center to send Pulcher home for the 3-1 lead.
BPCC got to within one run again in the fourth inning but LSC-PA managed to extend its lead with a critical fourth run in the sixth. Hernandez doubled to open the inning and with two outs, Andrus singled to right to push home the run for a 4-2 Seahawks lead.
Bossier Parish added another run in the seventh inning to close the score to 4-3 but Angelica Rogers, working on the hill in relief, closed out the win with a strikeout for the Seahawks.
The Hawks had nine hits in the game, led by Miller with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a triple and a run scored. Sheridan was 2 for 3 and Pulcher finished 2 for 2.
Rogers pitched the complete game, allowing two earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
LSC-PA improved its record to 3-6 overall with another doubleheader set for Wednesday at noon at Martin Field.
