Memorial to receive golden footballs

Published 2:38 pm Monday, January 25, 2016

Port Arthur Memorial will finally experience its golden moment as the Super Bowl draws near.

The high school will receive the eight golden footballs in commemoration of the Super Bowl’s 50th edition during a school ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday. The ceremony is not open to the public, however.

More than 2,000 schools and almost 3,000 individuals who were either players or head coaches are being similarly honored through the NFL’s Super Bowl High School Honor Roll, which is organizing the presentation. Each of Memorial’s gold balls represents a player from the Port Arthur Independent School District who either played or coached in the Big Game.

Memorial, which is among 326 Texas schools honored, is receiving the most golden footballs nationally. The local honorees are players from the former Lincoln and Stephen F. Austin high schools and coach Jimmy Johnson, a Thomas Jefferson graduate who currently is a studio analyst on “Fox NFL Sunday.”

Austin, Jefferson and Lincoln consolidated to form Memorial in 2002.

Jordan Babineaux, a Lincoln graduate who was a safety on the 2005-06 Seattle Seahawks team that played in Super Bowl 39 will make an appearance at the ceremony, according to an NFL spokesperson. Babineaux, whose brother Jonathan is a defensive tackle for the Atlanta Falcons, is an analyst for NFL Network.

The other six Super Bowl participants from the PAISD are:

  • Eric Alexander of Austin, a linebacker with the Patriots in Super Bowl 39 (2005, defeated the Eagles);
  • Aaron Brown of Lincoln, a defensive end with the Chiefs in the first Super Bowl (1967, lost to the Packers) and Super Bowl 4 (1970, defeated the Vikings);
  • Duriel Harris of Austin, a wide receiver with the Dolphins in Super Bowl 17 (1983, lost to the Redskins);
  • Bobby Leopold of Lincoln, a linebacker with the 49ers in Super Bowl 16 (1982, defeated the Bengals);
  • Tim McKyer of Lincoln, a cornerback with the 49ers in Super Bowls 23 and 24 (1989, defeated the Bengals; 1990, defeated the Broncos); and
  • Joe Washington of Lincoln, a running back with the Redskins in Super Bowls 17 and 18 (1983, defeated the Dolphins; 1984, lost to the Raiders).

Johnson coached the Dallas Cowboys to victories in Super Bowls 27 and 28 (1993 and 1994) and is one of three coaches — Barry Switzer and Pete Carroll are the others — to win national collegiate and NFL championships as head coaches. Jordan Babineaux’s Seahawks lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl 40. Leopold is a teacher at Memorial.

Port Neches-Groves graduate Wade Phillips is the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos, who will play the Carolina Panthers in this season’s Super Bowl on Feb. 7 in Santa Clara, California. Phillips, a former NFL head coach, was the DC on the 1989-90 Broncos team that played in Super Bowl 24.

West Orange-Stark has produced two Super Bowl players: cornerback Kevin Smith (won three with the Cowboys 1993, 1994 and 1996) and safety Earl Thomas (won with Seahawks in 2014 and lost in 2015). There was no word on an Honor Roll ceremony for West Orange-Stark, whose football team recently won the 4A Division II state championship.
