HAMMOND, La. – Addesha Collins kept up her hot scoring, but the Lamar University Cardinals saw their road woes continue as they dropped a 73-66 decision to Southeastern Louisiana in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night.
Collins poured in 24 points to reach double figures for the eighth straight game. The senior guard is averaging a conference-best 21.6 points per game in Southland contests. It wasn’t enough for LU however, as the Cardinals (6-10 overall, 2-3 Southland) fell to 0-9 on the road this season. Freshman forward Kiara Desamours recorded her third career double-double for LU, finishing with 5 points and 12 rebounds.
The Cardinals dominated the early going, leading by as many as 14 points in the first quarter and holding a 27-15 advantage after the opening period. The second quarter was a different story, however, as Southeastern Louisiana (3-12, 2-2) outscored LU 21-7 to take a 36-34 lead into intermission. The Lady Lions led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter before the Cardinals staged a desperate comeback, but could never get closer than seven points.
“It’s frustrating that we can’t win on the road,” LU coach Robin Harmony said. “We have to find a way to handle adversity.”
Nanna Pool had a double-double for Southeastern Louisiana, collecting 18 points and 10 rebounds. KaeLynn Boyd had 15 points for SLU, while Taylin Underwood and Erica Hernandez added 13 points apiece.
Teleshia Riley came off the bench to add a season-high 11 points for LU, while Chastadie Barrs added seven points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the loss. The Cardinals, who are 6-1 at home this season, look to get back on the winning track when they host Northwestern State at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Montagne Center. That contest is the opening game of a doubleheader, with the men’s game between LU and Northwestern State scheduled to get under way at 4:30 p.m. For ticket information, call 409-880-1715, or visit Both games will be shown on ESPN3 and broadcast on KLVI (AM 560).
