Phone scammers targeting Nederland residents

NEDERLAND — Phone scammers likely using a caller ID spoofing process are targeting Nederland citizens about a possible warrant for their arrest.
Nederland Police Chief Darrell Bush said they received five to six reports from residents who had received a call from the Nederland Police Department’s primary number of 722-4965.
Once the person answers the phone they are told a warrant has been issued for their arrest and if they don’t pay immediately an officer will be at their door to arrest them.
The caller goes so far as to give a case number to reference when the citizen pays their fine. The caller then gives the victim and out-of-state phone number to call to arrange payment of the fake fine.
Bush said the NPS does not accept any payments over the phone.
“This is a phone scam. Do not make any payments to these people,” Bush said.
Orange County recently experienced the same problem, he added.
Persons with questions regarding this can call the police department at 722-4965.
