Coast Guard medevacs boy from cruise over 10 miles offshore Galveston

HOUSTON — A Coast Guard boat crew medevaced a 12-year-old boy from a cruise ship 10 miles offshore Galveston, Sunday evening.

At 4:30 p.m. Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders received a request from the crew of the cruise ship Caribbean Princess for the medevac of a passenger suffering from abdominal pains.

Watchstanders launched a Station Galveston 45-foot boat crew with Galveston EMS personnel aboard which arrived on scene at 5:25 p.m. and picked up the boy and his his two relatives.

He was taken by ambulance from Station Galveston to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and reported in stable condition.

“Timely coordination from ship to shore allowed the child to receive adequate medical attention,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Jeff Linberg, a watchstander at Sector Houston-Galveston. “The Coast Guard was able to respond quickly despite the weather.”
