GIRLS ROUNDUP: Porterfield sinks 26, but Ned comeback too short

HAMSHIRE — The Nederland Lady Bulldogs fell in the team’s basketball season opener.

Hamshire-Fannett capitalized on a low-scoring first period by the Lady Bulldogs to win 50-45 despite 26 points from Nederland’s Christine Porterfield.

The Lady Longhorns led 23-2 after the first period and were ahead 38-21 at the break.

Nederland (0-1) then outscored H-F (0-1) 15-5 to close the gap to 42-36 heading into the fourth. The Lady Bulldogs won the fourth 9-7 and could not make up the full difference.

Nederland next will play in the Hardin-Jefferson varsity tournament Thursday through Saturday.

Orangefield 73, Beaumont Kelly 14

ORANGEFIELD — The Orangefield Lady Bobcats cruised past the Beaumont Kelly Lady Bulldogs 73-14 in the season opener for both teams at Bobcat Gym Tuesday night.

The Lady Bobcats placed five players in double figures in the blowout win.

Hanna Lowe paced the Orangefield arsenal with 20 points and also added six steals. Bethany Green connected on four three-point bombs and finished with 14 points and five steals. Emmi Lummus had 13 points, four assists and four steals. Paris Fregia contributed 12 points, six assists and three steals while Sabryn Crain had 10 points, seven steals and five rebounds.

The Lady Bobcats will visit Beaumont West Brook next Tuesday.
