Booker T. Washington Elementary School has implemented a new literacy program titled, “Reading Power Hour,” for the 2015-2016 school year. During the last hour of the day, all students practice their reading fluency skills.

Teachers plan daily exercises such as letters, sounds, and/or word drills, fluency probes, and “Readers Theater” to assist students to ensure that they are reading, comprehending and performing at and/or above their grade level. At the end of the two weeks, a class from each grade level performs their “Readers Theater” for the entire school. On alternate weeks, a guest reader is invited to read to each grade level.

On November 6^th, published author, Elzadia Meguess, will be the guest reader. She will read her newest book, “It’s All About Mrs. Franklin,” to all grade levels from 1-3 p.m. Meguess is a retired elementary teacher from Beaumont.

Port Arthur librarian, Carolyn Thibodeaux, and Port Arthur Mayor Deloris “Bobbie” Prince will be guest readers on November 20^th.
