Booker T. Washington Elementary School has implemented a new literacy program titled, “Reading Power Hour,” for the 2015-2016 school year. During the last hour of the day, all students practice their reading fluency skills.
Teachers plan daily exercises such as letters, sounds, and/or word drills, fluency probes, and “Readers Theater” to assist students to ensure that they are reading, comprehending and performing at and/or above their grade level. At the end of the two weeks, a class from each grade level performs their “Readers Theater” for the entire school. On alternate weeks, a guest reader is invited to read to each grade level.
On November 6th, published author, Elzadia Meguess, will be the guest reader. She will read her newest book, “It’s All About Mrs. Franklin,” to all grade levels from 1-3 p.m. Meguess is a retired elementary teacher from Beaumont.
Port Arthur librarian, Carolyn Thibodeaux, and Port Arthur Mayor Deloris “Bobbie” Prince will be guest readers on November 20th.
