PORT NECHES — A homebuilder is looking to construct an apartment complex in Port Neches.

The homebuilder, Jeff Akhtar of Amron Housing Groups, owns the Palms Apartments in Port Neches as well as other apartment complexes in the area and has built a number of homes in the city.

Akhtar is requesting three variances from the Zoning Board of Adjustment of the City of Port Neches for the property at 3031 Eighth St. One request is to go above the two-story height requirement to build a three-story building. He is also asking to put more than 12 attached dwelling units under one roof and go beyond acreage density.

“He has proposed to construct an apartment complex on property that is zoned multi-family residential,” Port Neches City Manager Andrè Wimer said.

The property is near the intersection of Eighth Street and Twin City Highway. There are several other apartment complexes in the area where Akhtar is proposing his project.

According to plans submitted to the city, the complex consists of four buildings, one with 16 units, one with 42 units, one with 33 units and one with 49 units.

Akhtar was met with disdain in Groves back in May when he requested an expansion to Axis Manor Apartments.

The zoning board will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9 at Port Neches City Hall, 1005 Merriman St.
