Rock-A-Noos, Lady Dogs set playoffs

The District 22-5A playoffs are now set for Nederland and Port Neches-Groves.

Nederland (26-13) finished second in the district standings with a 12-2 mark and now face Porter out of District 21-5A at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Anahuac High School.

The Rock-A-Noos (24-15) clinched third place Friday with a four-game win over Lumberton and now take on Kingwood Park Tuesday at Goose Creek Memorial High School. The time for the match has not been set.

On Friday, the Rock-A-Noos defeated the Lady Raiders 25-18, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-17 behind another strong match from senior Emily Taubert. She had 22 service points and 37 digs. Sophomore Libbie LeJeune had 14 points and 16 kills, Rachel Hammersmith finished with 38 assists while Hannah Hernandez added 30, Carley Roccaforte had 15 kills and 12 digs and Kaitlyn Gil added 11 kills.

Lamar VB falls to Houston Baptist

HOUSTON — Down 2-0, the Lamar University volleyball team mounted a fabulous comeback bid, but it fell just short in a 21-19 fifth-set loss it is 3-2 defeat (20-25, 26-28, 25-13, 25-22, 19-21) at Houston Baptist Saturday in Southland Conference action at Sharp Gym.

Neither Lamar (13-12, 3-8 Southland Conference) nor Houston Baptist (15-12, 7-5) had a lead larger than one in the fifth until the set was final at 21-19. Cortney Moore, Murielle Hlavac, Carlyn Stella and Autumn Taylor all had phenomenal fourth sets with four kills apiece, and led an offensive attack that 18 kills for its 19 points.

HBU had match point four times (including the clincher) and Lamar three times. In an exciting environment for both teams, Kayla Armer gave the Huskies a 20-19 advantage, and a LU attack error ended it.

Down 2-0, Lamar answered the call right out of the locker room during the intermission and dominated the third set. Two service aces from Stella and kills from Stella and Chelsea Grant had LU with a 5-0 lead.  A service error snapped that run, but LU responded with an eight-point run that ran the score to 14-2.

Lamar will return to action on Tuesday when it heads to Stephen F. Austin for a rematch with the Lumberjacks.  It finishes its five-match road swing on Thursday at New Orleans and Saturday at Southeastern Louisiana.

Seahawks fall to Pensacola State

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks dropped their second straight game at the Pensacola State College Tournament, falling to the host team 74-65 on Saturday night at Hartsell Arena.

The Seahawks drop to 0-2 to start the season after losing to Gulf Coast State College 87-74 on Friday afternoon in the annual Pensacola tournament.

In Saturday night’s game, Seahawks sophomore Jordon Harris led his team with 20 points, five rebounds and six steals, while Freddie Williams Jr. added 17 points. Sophomore Colton Weisbrod added 14 points with four rebounds and two steals.

LSC-Port Arthur opens its home schedule on Saturday, Nov. 7, with a 4 p.m. game against Lone Star College-Cy Fair at the Carl Parker Center.

OHIO STATE QB BARRETT SUSPENDED

ESPN reported Saturday Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett was suspended one game after being charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Ohio State announced the one-game suspension will be served on Nov. 7 against Minnesota. The nation’s top-ranked team was off this week.

A source told ESPN that Barrett, 20, was detained when he tried to avoid a DUI checkpoint near the campus and then failed a Breathalyzer. The source also reported Barrett was then released to fellow Buckeyes quarterback Cardale Jones.

A sophomore from Wichita Falls, Barrett won back the starting job from Jones just last week. He was the starter in 2014 but broke his ankle in the regular season finale against Michigan. Jones took over and led the Buckeyes to the national championship.
