LU’s BERGLUND HOLDS THREE-SHOT LEAD

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Lamar’s Mans Berglund fired a blistering 5-under-par 66 in the second round of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate on Monday to take sole possession of first place heading into today’s final round.

Berglund had eight birdies and three bogeys on the 7,242-yard, par-71 layout at the New Mexico State Golf Course. Berglund finished the day at 4-under-par 138 for 36 holes, three strokes ahead of a trio of golfers, including LU teammate Zander Gous, at 1-under 141.

As a team, the Cardinals enter Tuesday’s final round in second place among the 14-team field at 10-over-par 578, six strokes behind UTEP. The Cardinals were in ninth place after a first-round total of 298 before posting the best team round of the day, a 4-under-par 280 in the second round.

CHANG AHEAD OF FRED MARX FIELD

CALHOUN, La. — Lamar University’s Wenny Chang hammered away at the rest of the field to take a three-stroke lead into the final round of the ULM Fred Marx Invitational.

Chang, the reigning Southland Conference Women’s Golfer of the Year, posted rounds of 77 and 73 Monday for a two-round total of 6-over 150 on the lightning-fast 6,221-yard, par-72 Calvert Crossings Country Club layout. LU teammate Olivia Le Roux is tied for second at 9-over 153 with Gianti Mahardhika of McLennan Community College.

LU’s Taylor Stockton is tied for sixth at 13-over 157, to help the Cardinals end the day in second place, just two strokes behind Southern Mississippi heading into Tuesday’s final round.

LU BATTLES TO TIE WITH UIW IN SOCCER

BEAUMONT — Freshman Jordan Mulnix tied a Lamar single-season record with her 12th goal of the season, but the Cardinals saw their postseason hopes dampened after battling to a 1-1 tie with visiting Incarnate Word in a Southland Conference women’s soccer game Sunday.

Mulnix’s goal tied the mark set by Kimmy Albeon in 2012. It was the 42nd goal of the season for the Cardinals (6-10-1, 2-5-1 Southland), breaking the previous team mark of 41 set in 2012. The tie leaves the Cardinals trailing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by three points for the final Southland Conference Tournament berth with three games remaining. McNeese State and Northwestern state are also ahead of the Cardinals in the standings.

Incarnate Word (3-11-2, 1-5-2) jumped into an early lead on an unassisted goal by Sabrina Martineau just 7:50 into the contest. Martineau took advantage of a miscommunication on the LU back line to pick up a loose ball and blast a shot into the upper right corner past LU goalkeeper Lauren Lovejoy.

HARDEN CARRIES BANGED-UP ROCKETS

HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden scored 20 points and Houston had six in double figures as the Rockets defeated the New Orleans Pelicans, 120-100 in a preseason game Monday at the Toyota Center.

The Rockets outscored the Pelicans 40-13 in the fourth quarter after trailing by seven after three.

Trevor Ariza and Ty Lawson had 18 points apiece. Marcus Thornton had 16 off the bench. Clint Capela returned to action from a sore right shoulder. He had 10. Rookie Montrezl Harrell got the start at power forward. He finished with 13.

Ryan Anderson scored 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Kendrick Perkins chipped in 10. For the Rockets, Dwight Howard missed a sixth consecutive preseason game with back tightness. Patrick Beverley was out with groin soreness. Terrence Jones was out with a concussion. Corey Brewer missed with a sore toe. Donatas Motiejunas missed again with back pain.
