  • Benefit for Kason Avila, noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at Encounter Church, 5300 Twin City Hwy in Groves. Kason was born June 12 with acute myeloid leukemia. He was immediately transferred to UTMB then to Texas Children’s Hospital a few days later. He has since started a treatment plan which will consist of a four-month in-patient stay at Texas Children’s. The benefit will feature live music, kids’ activities, silent auction, baked goods auction, T-shirts, bracelets and barbecue plates.
