Woman injured in child abduction; suspect jailed

A Beaumont man is in jail on aggravated kidnapping and other charges and a 4-year-old child has been reunited with its mother, who was injured in the incident that occurred Tuesday afternoon in Labelle.

On Tuesday August 25, 2015 at approximately 5:02 pm, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a call of a stabbing that had just occurred in the 12500 Block of Labelle Road in Labelle. The caller advised that a woman had been stabbed by her boyfriend in the arm and the boyfriend had just left the scene in a white Dodge pickup.

Responding deputies found the woman lying in the driveway with a significant wound to the left hand and arm. While deputies were enroute, the suspect also called 911 and stated that he wanted to drop off the girl in the area of FM 365 and LaBelle Road. The suspect gave dispatch incorrect information of his current location in order to elude deputies.

The suspect drove to his parents’ residence and switched vehicles. The suspect continued to give information as to his wanting to surrender. The Dispatchers were able to keep him on the phone and arrange for a safe-surrender in the parking lot of Ford Park on IH-10. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident and the 4 year old child was recovered.

The victim was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment by LaBelle – Fannett VFD Ambulance and was reunited with her daughter at this location.  The Suspect is identified as Cody Melton, 35, of Beaumont. He was booked into the Jefferson County Correctional Facility on the following charges: aggravated assault – family- with deadly weapon, with bond set at $100,000; aggravated kidnapping, with bond set at $100,000; assault aggravated (warrant), no bond; and assault family – felony (warrant), no bond.
