CHICAGO — A triple bogey on a 162-yard, par 3 — his 13th hole of the day — derailed Braden Bailey on the first day of qualifying in the U.S. Amateur Championship at Olympia Fields.

Bailey, after making the turn in one-over 36, stumbled to a 42 on his second nine and finished with a 78 on the par 70 North Course. He was tied for 271st in a field of 312 that will be trimmed to the low 64 after today’s second round.

The Port Neches-Groves ex had gotten off to a solid start with eight consecutive pars. But three straight bogeys, starting at the par-4 18th, got him headed in the wrong direction. A par at the second hole, his 11th, temporarily stopped the bleeding but the disaster on the par-3 fourth followed.

Bailey rebounded with three consecutive pars, then finished bogey-bogey.

Matt NeSmith of North Augusta, S.C. had the day’s opening round with a five-under 65. A total of 53 players shot par or better.
