PAPD officer involved in auto accident
A Port Arthur policeman is recovering from minor injuries sustained in an automobile accident Tuesday, while the person driving the other vehicle is facing DWI charges.
Officer J. Green, at approximately 9:15 p.m., contacted the police department’s dispatcher to report he had been involved in a major auto crash at the intersection of the 7500 block of U.S. 69 access road and the 2900 block of Jimmy Johnson Blvd., according to a press statement issued by PAPD.
Green was operating his patrol unit, a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, when the other vehicle, a 2013 Ford truck, failed to stop at the stop sign, according to evidence and witnesses at the scene.
The Ford was driven by Christopher Merkerson, of Missouri City.
The PAPD reported Merkerson was traveling westbound and failed to stop at the stop sign, striking the right front quarter of Green’s patrol unit as Green was traveling northbound through the intersection.
Green was taken to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas for minor injuries. Merkerson was treated for minor injuries by EMS personnel at the scene.
The Texas Department of Public Safety was contacted to work the crash scene per police department policy. Additionally, a Drug Recognition Expert officer was responded.
Merkerson was taken into custody, medically cleared, then transported to the Jefferson County Jail and booked for DWI
