Swimming lessons, family passes, pool parties available

NEDERLAND — The Nederland Parks and Recreation Department is stepping out of the box this summer, bringing Disco, the 1950s and children’s movies to the Nederland Swimming Pool with a new installment of the pool’s weekly Family Night series.

Angela Fanette, Nederland Parks and Recreation director, said the Thursday theme nights are a fun way to provide visitors a pool experience that goes “beyond the usual pool activities.”

“We’re really excited about our summer Family Night series,” Fanette said Wednesday. “We get to be on the side of the pool, hanging out and having fun with our guests. We can offer more of a party atmosphere and give our visitors something different.”

Fanette said Family Nights kicked off Thursday, June 11, with an Extreme Lip Sync party. A dozen children and the pool life guards stepped up to the microphone and gave entertaining renditions of Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk,” while one little girl was so into her performance the pool staff turned her microphone on so she could actually sing “Let it Go.”

The pool will host a Mad Scientist party Thursday, offering different experiments for visitors to try around the pool. The remaining Family Night events are:

• June 25, 50s Night
• July 2, Family Game Night
• July 9, Disco
• July 16, Movie Night: “The Lorax”
• July 23, Movie Night: “Big Hero 6”
• July 30, Movie Night: “E.T.” with bike ride in Doornbos Park
• Aug. 6, Movie Night: “Toy Story”
• Aug. 13, Back to School Splash

Family Nights are scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. each Thursday through Aug. 13. Domino’s will serve pizza at each event. Movies do not start until the sun goes down.

The Nederland Swimming Pool — which just got a see-through rock wall and is currently undergoing slide repairs — is also the site for private and public swimming lessons this summer, with public classes starting at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. The minimum age for swimming lessons is 6 months.

Fanette said the Parks and Recreation Department is still booking private pool parties and offering family passes for the 2015 pool season. Different rates are available for Nederland residents than non-residents.
