Hurricane season is here, have your family’s plan ready
It’s hard to believe it’s already June and that Hurricane Season has begun. The prognosticators predict a below-average season this year for storm activity, but as our local emergency responders were quick to remind us in our story about the beginning of the season — it only takes one.
There are many sources of information about how to prepare for hurricane season but the key, now that the June 1 beginning date has passed, is to have a plan. Know in advance what your family will do if Southeast Texas is threatened with a hurricane. Know well in advance you evacuation destination, keeping in mind that hotel rooms are snatched up quickly when a storm is in the Gulf. Have a plan about the route you will take, who will go and have a discussion so everyone knows what your family’s plan is.
With some luck, the forecast for a slow year will turn out to be correct and at the end of the season the plans can be put on the shelf to wait for a new year. But having a plan now, in case the unexpected happens, could save time and worry in case the threat of a hurricane once again bears down on the Upper Texas Coast.
