GROVES — Groves Planning and Zoning Commission is set to continue discussion on a request for a specific use permit for the expansion of Axis Manor Apartments during a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at city hall, 3947 Lincoln Ave., Groves.
The owners of the apartment complex, A&A Housing of Orange, is requesting the permit to construct 108 units in the new Palms of Groves apartment community adjacent to the complex. Owners of the property plan to build a community of luxury apartments for working people and their families with two and three bedroom units with an average rent of $1,000 per month.
Homeowners in the area turned out for a recent city council meeting to discuss the issue and one by one took to the podium to express distrust and even anger at how Axis has been managed.
One main issue, directed at Jeff Akhtar of A&A Housing of Orange and his family and representatives was the property hadn’t been maintained properly in the past 10 years since the Akhtar’s took ownership. Complaints ran from traffic and parking issues, trash and littering to crime.
No property owners spoke in favor of the issue during the nearly two hour long meeting on Monday, May 18, and all homeowners who took to the podium did so against the expansion.
The planning and zoning commission will make a recommendation to Groves City Council who will then make a final decision.
