Social group expands live band lineups, dancing opportunities

The Jefferson County Singles’ Club has added new events to its usual weekly dancing night.

Tonia Hass, Jefferson County Singles’ Club cashier, said the group originally only offered live bands and dancing on Sundays but stepped up its game at the beginning of May.

“The Jefferson County Singles’ Club is a great place to meet new people, and it’s not just for singles. We welcome married couples, too,” Hass said Thursday, with a laugh. “Every event we have features a live band and it’s set on the best dance floor around. It’s a huge dance floor — the perfect place to learn some new moves.”

Hass said Cajun Night is a flashback to the old Rodair Club in Port Acres. The Jefferson County Singles’ Club works the bar while a local Cajun radio station schedules the musicians.

“This is really a throwback to the Rodair Club,” Hass said. “They wanted to bring that atmosphere back, so once a month they lease our building and bring in these great Cajun artists.

The cover charge for Cajun Night varies, sometimes up to $10 and $12, because it all depends on how much the radio station is paying to bring the bands in.”

Hass said in addition to Cajun Night, the Singles’ Club has expanded its weekly Sunday event to include Tuesdays, as well.

“We’ve had a lot of change over the last month,” she said. “We’re open Tuesday nights now, and on the first Tuesday of each month we’re going to host a potluck dinner. We also added a 50-50 drawing for cash on Sundays. It’s all about people having fun and raising some money for the singles.”

Hass said the Singles’ Club charges a $7 cover for each of the Tuesday and Sunday events, but the group also offers a lifetime membership for $5.

“A lot of our dancers start off at Pine Tree Lodge and then come to us twice a week as soon as they leave there,” she said, laughing. “Some of them are dancing seven nights a week — it’s outrageous. But don’t let some of their ages fool you. They can show you some moves.

“The Singles’ Club is really for anybody who wants to join. Right now, it’s probably more for your parents and grandparents, but we’d like to get some younger people involved. It’s just such a great atmosphere, and we’re non-smoking now, too.”

Hass said doors open for Cajun Night at 6 p.m. and the band starts at 7 p.m. Friday’s Cajun entertainment will be Kevin Naquin and Ossun Playboys.

Doors open every Tuesday at 5 p.m. and the band starts at 6 p.m. Doors open every Sunday at 4 p.m. and the band starts at 5 p.m.

The Jefferson County Singles’ Club is located at 7601 Green Ave. in Nederland.
