Seniors bowl off steam at Honor Grad Fun Day

The Nederland Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Bureau treated 18 Nederland High School seniors to a day at Max Bowl in Port Arthur Thursday for the Chamber’s annual Honor Grad Fun Day.

Diana LaBorde, Nederland Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Bureau president and CEO, said this year’s event — co-sponsored by the Chamber and Associated Builders and Contractors — is keeping with tradition.

“The Chamber has Honor Grad Fun Day every year, although we are at a new venue this year,” LaBorde said Thursday. “For the longest time, we brought the top graduating seniors to Sports Connection in Nederland. When they closed in October, we knew we’d have to find somewhere else to bring our seniors.”

LaBorde said Max Bowl immediately came to mind when thinking of a new venue, because it would give the seniors a day to try their skills in the arcade, in laser tag and, of course, in the bowling alley.

Chi Tran, Nederland High School senior counselor, said the 18 students invited to the Chamber’s Honor Grad Fun Day Thursday are the Top 5 percent of their graduating class of 363 students.

“This is probably the last time these kids are going to be together as a group,” LaBorde said. “Graduating in the Top 5 percent, we know these kids have worked incredibly hard all four years of high school. We want these last memories together to not just include their hard work at school but as a group of friends having a good time. Blowing off some of their stress before graduation sounds like a great way to achieve that goal.”
