The Lamar baseball team may have started two relatively inexperienced starting pitchers on Saturday, but the duo of Chase Angelle and Will Hibbs certainly proved its mettle, helping the Cardinals to 10-1 and 3-1 victories over LIU Brooklyn at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

    “Angelle was very efficient, and Will was the same way,” head coach Jim Gilligan said. “I’m very pleased with the way the pitching did today, giving up just two runs in 18 innings. It’s a long season with a lot of new guys, and hopefully, the development takes place daily. It certainly did today. I’m happy with the way a lot of kids played today.”

    Angelle, who was coming off a career performance a week ago bettered it this time around, tossing seven innings and allowing just one run on six hits and striking out four. Will Hibbs followed up in the late afternoon game with a career-best 6.1 innings without allowing a run to cross home plate. The sophomore gave up seven hits, but walked just one and struck out three.

    “I had a much better pre-game tonight, and it felt more natural,” Hibbs explained. “None of us were going to get a whole lot of starts behind Jonathan Dziedzic and Eric Harrington last year, so it was a really good day for me and Chase. Last week was kind of a learning experience for us with so many new guys, and I think we’ve gotten better since.”

    Relievers Zach Aitken and Brandon Kirkham also had good showings as the former threw two innings of one-hit ball, and the latter allowed one run over 2.2 en route to picking up his second save of the year.

    After scoring nine runs on Friday, the offense once again featured in the early afternoon encounter as the Cards rode a six-run first inning on the way to a 12-hit, 10-run outing.

    Brandon Provost played the role of bandleader in the offensive showcase, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a five runs batted in and a score. Jude Vidrine also had a three-hit day and scored twice, and Kevin Santana ended 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and an RBI.

    Vidrine fired the opening salvo with a one-out double to right, and two-out walks by Santana and Tyler Sullivan loaded the bases. Another walk gave LU the 1-0 lead, and Provost cleared the bases moments later with a three-run double to right center. Back-to-back singles by Jake Sutton and Mason Salazar finished off the assault.

    Vidrine once again doubled in the fourth and later scored on a two-out single by Santana to put LU up 7-0.

    After LIU reclaimed a score in the sixth, the Cards struck for two more in the seventh on a Provost double down the left field line, and Wayne Stanley would touch home on a wild pitch in the eighth to put double-digits on the scoreboard for LU for the first time this season.

    Santana pushed across the first run in the second game with a first inning double to plate Reed Seeley. The junior out of Blinn College was the only Card to record multiple hits in the second game, ending 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

    In the fourth, Santana singled and later scored on a Jacoby Middleton single to left, and a Kyle Markum single brought home Sullivan in the sixth.

    The series finale  pitch is set for 11 a.m. Sunday.
