Marie Calcote, born November 18, 1912 in Downsville, LA, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Katy Memorial Hermann Hospital in Katy, TX, at the age of 101.  

   She is preceded in death by her parents, Herbert Cage and Emma Wright, her husband of 59 years, Roy Kenny Calcote; two brothers, four sisters and one great-grandson.

   She was a devoted member of Eastern Star Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the Pastor’s Chorus, and was one of the organizing members of the Free Will Circle.

    She loved sitting on her porch talking with her children and neighbors, and also watching her grandchildren play.  She loved cooking for her family, especially holiday cooking and baking.  She had a charming sense of humor that was enjoyed by the entire family and also had a beautiful singing voice that moved everyone who heard it.

   She leaves to live on her legacy, her eight children, Elaine Walker, Roy Calcote Jr. (Mary), Maxine Hayes, a son-in-law Bob Hayes Sr., Willie Calcote (Bertha), Vivien Calcote, Betty Traveler, Ada Steward (Lawrence), and Herbert Calcote, and a foster daughter, Jeanava Pollard, as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

   Funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. (today), Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Eastern Star Baptist Church with a viewing from 9 a.m. until service time.  Pastor Lloyd Scott will officiate.  Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.
