Lamar State-Port Arthur freshman Marci West pitched the second no-hitter in school history and teammate Loni Prouse belted a three-run double in extra innings as the Seahawks swept their Region XIV softball doubleheader against Coastal Bend Wednesday.

The 3-0, 5-2 victories pulled the Seahawks, 18-25 overall, 9-11 in conference, percentage points ahead of 8-10 Blinn College in the South Zone standings for the fourth and final regional tournament berth. Blinn, idle Wednesday, plays at Coastal Bend Thursday before hosting the Seahawks in Brenham Friday at 1 p.m.

West, from Anacoco, La., pitched both ends of the doubleheader for the Seahawks, improving her season record to 12-8 with a pair of saves.

She notched her 101st strikeout of the season while allowing six hits in the eight-inning second game, a game in which she did not allow a baserunner over the final five innings. She struck out six batters, walked two and two more were hit by pitches in the opener. She struck out two, walked none and hit none in the second.

Danielle Treadway pitched the only other no-hitter in Seahawks history, coming in a 3-0 win over Jones County (Miss.) Junior College Feb. 17, 2012. Earlier this season, West tossed a one-hitter in a 2-0 win over San Jacinto College on March 7.

In Wednesday’s second game, Coastal Bend’s Cougars – now 2-16 in conference play — held leads of 1-0 and 2-1. Bri Miller, Nederland freshman, singled home pinch-runner Josie Crochet, Lake Charles freshman, in the top of the sixth to tie the game 2-2.

Kenady Magouirk, Baytown freshman, one of four multi-hit players in a 13-hit Seahawks attack, singled to lead off the eighth and teammate Bekah Blanda, Beaumont freshman, reached on a fielder’s choice. After Ricki Gilbert, Port Neches freshman, singled to load the bases, Prouse, a sophomore from Orange, doubled to center field, clearing the bases.

Lani Woods, Haughton, La., freshman who led Lamar State-Port Arthur with a 3-for-4 plate performance, singled Prouse to third, but the rally ended there. West came on to author her fifth straight three-up, three-down inning and nail down the crucial win.

LSC-PA plays another doubleheader Friday at Blinn College.
