CHESTER MOORE: Don’t forget S.A.L.T. Youth Division

    The Saltwater Angler’s League of Texas (SALT) Memorial Day Classic Fishing Tournament takes place this weekend.

    This will be the first event held at their new clubhouse on Pleasure Island and features several new categories.

    Anglers should remember there is a free youth division for the annual event.

      Junior anglers (15 and younger) can compete for first place prizes for categories ranging from crabs to croaker and everything in between.

    The youth division is free of charge and signing up is not necessary. Kids can just show up and weigh in their catches at the SALT Club.

     Adult anglers who want to sign up still have a chance today and can pay $30 to fish both the inshore and offshore divisions.

    Tickets are being sold at The Boat Ramp, Peggy’s On the Bayou, Simon Outfitters, Jorgensen Marine, Heritage Marine, County Home & Ranch, Sportsman’s Supply, West End Hardware, Tally’s Tackle, Causeway Bait, Tackle & Grill, Daley’s Hunt ‘n’ Fish, Terry’s Rod An’ Reel, and Simmon’s Tire.

     Now onto the report…

    North Sabine—Texas Parks & Wildlife Department officials report trout are fair to good on the Louisiana shoreline on topwaters and Corkies. Flounder are fair on jigs tipped with shrimp around marsh drains. Trout are good in the river on shad.

    South Sabine—Trout and reds remain fair to good under schools of shad on the main lake. Look for birds working early along the Louisiana shoreline. Flounder remain fair on live mud minnows and Gulp.

    Sabine Pass—Sharks are good on cut baited fished at the jetties. Anglers are beginning to report some trout on live bait as well as redfish. Flounder are fair in the channel around drop-offs on live finger mullet and mud minnows.

    Lake Calcasieu (Big Lake)—Hackberry Rod and Gun reports anglers are catching big trout early in the morning on live shrimp and mullet under a popping cork and on east beast colored Hackberry Hustlers. Reds are mixed with the trout and biting along the shorelines. Very few reports of flounder.

    Sam Rayburn—Texas Parks & Wildlife Department officials report largemouths are are fair on minnows and small spinnerbaits. White bass are good on minnows and slabs. Crappie are good on minnows and Li’l Fishies over brush piles. Bream are good on shrimp and nightcrawlers. Catfish are fair on trotlines baited with live bait.

    Toledo Bend—Holly Park Marina reports largemouths are good in deep water on crankbaits and football jigs. Crappie are good over baited holes around deep boat docks and on the main lake as well as around the bridges. Bream remain shallow and anglers are taking worms and crickets. Very few reports of catfish.
