Berdine Vittum died peacefully, surrounded by her family in Round Rock, Texas, on May 12, 2012 at the age of 91.

Berdine was born on October 25, 1920 in Williamstown Pennsylvania to Edward and Lottie Miller. She moved with her family to Port Arthur Texas in 1928, a town she called home for the next seventy one years.  She loved being a Texan.  She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, Port Arthur Business College and later worked at Gulf Oil (Chevron) for twenty five years before retiring. She enjoyed any kind of card game but especially playing bridge with her sister Barbara and friends. She loved cooking Sunday roast dinners for her family, taking her grandsons on summer vacations, Christmas mornings, the day after Christmas sales at Foley’s in Houston, and Coca Cola. Her other passion was knitting and over the years she created many beautiful afghans which she would store away in a closet until someone had a birthday, anniversary, or baby. In her later years she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, going through at least one book a week, watching game shows, eating chocolate, Mexican food, and anything with cheese on it.

She was affectionately known as Grandmother until her oldest grandson, Troy, shortened it to simply GM. When her great grandchildren came along the name Great Mother was added by her great granddaughter, Kristin. She and her husband Bill had many friends they loved spending time with and would swim at the YMCA every day which was sometimes more of a social event than exercise.

She was preceded in death by her husband of forty six years, William C. Vittum (Pappy) as well as all of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter Diane Thompson and her husband John of Pflugerville who she lived with for the last 10 years, her other daughter Vicki Debethencourt and her husband, Julio of Houston, two grandsons, Dr. Troy Thompson and his wife Mia of Round Rock, and Lt. Tory Thompson of Pflugerville; three great grandchildren, Drexel Thompson of Round Rock, and Kristin and Tyler Thompson of Pflugerville, and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 15, 2012 from 4:00 PM-7:00 PM at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home with burial to follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park.

She will be missed by her family and friends but is enjoying a life with the Lord and all her loved ones that went before her.
