Students at the Memorial High School Ninth Grade Center began planting vegetables Wednesday in a newly plowed community vegetable garden.

“Science classes will get fertilizer and seeds and plant vegetables to be given to the community,” said Andrew Knight, Head of the Biology department at the school.

“We cover the science of growing plants in our classes and then students will get to see the physical fruit of their labors,” added Knight.

The school received donations from area businesses and help from community clubs like the Kawanis and Hispanic Heritage Club.

School principal Lisa Chambers said the garden will help promote health and fitness and to build leadership skills.

Mayor Bobby Prince, who cut the ribbon on the garden, said the students will be the caretakers of this garden.

“I think their enjoyment will come out of watching the fruits of their hand come to till,” added Prince.
