NEDERLAND — Nederland Lady Bulldogs coach Toni Leach said her team played better than it did Tuesday night’s 3-0 loss against Port Neches-Groves, but better was not quite good enough for Nederland on Friday night against the visiting Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears, which made off with a 3-1 victory.

   The Lady Dogs slipped past the District 20-4A leading Lady Bears with a 27-25 decision in Game 1, but that was all that Nederland could manange. LC-M ran away with the second game, winning 25-16, narrowly escaped in Game 3 28-26, and then the Lady Bears closed the deal with a dominating 25-14 victory.

   “We did play better and I’m happy with that,” said Leach whose team fell to 7-12 overall and 0-3 in league play. “We still didn’t take advantage of leads but we played with confidence and had some fight tonight. That’s an improvement.”

   Injuries and a tough schedule to open district have played a significant role in Nederland’s rough start. The Lady Dogs began league play, losing a five-game set to Ozen, then traveled to the Reservation where they suffered a 3-0 loss and then faced the defending district champs on Friday.

   Leach said that was just the cards her team was dealt but figures her team will be more competitive in the coming weeks, as Nederland hosts Livingston and Central next week.

   Despite the loss, Nederland had strong performances from Jessica Cloud, Layken Richard and Alese Pinner, who had seven points, four kills and a dozen blocks. Richard tied LC-M’s Kellie Tilley for a game-high 19 assists. Cloud finished with a team-high nine points and eight kills, and added five digs.

   The Lady Dogs also got five digs from Cassie Hyde, who picked up five kills and five digs in the match as well. Logan LeBlanc led with nine digs. Jordy Lebouef chipped in with six points and five kills. Victoria Miller had four points and four kills, and Holly Pryor dished out eight assists.

    Last year’s district MVP and senior Christine Sticktich led the Lady Bears with 11 kills, and teammate Ashton Lavergne added 10 kills of her own.



Rock-A-Noos chops down Lions

LIVINGSTON — The Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians took out the Livingston Lady Lions in volleyball action on Friday night, winning three out of four to move to 13-11 overall and 2-1 in District 20-4A.

The Lady Tribe took the match with scores of 25-21, 25-21, 17-25 and 25-14.

Carlie Clopton and Paige Miller were the Lady Indians top players Friday, as each player tallied 10 service points. Clopton also had 10 digs and Miller produced 21 assists.

Also for the Rock-A-Noos, Lauryn Stephens led the way with seven kills and joined Ashley Landry in blocks with each player having three. Alexus Harper chipped in with 10 digs. Shelby Blanchard had nine points, Kirsten Sattlewhite pitched in with five kills and Paige Blount dished out 18 assists.

PN-G will take on Vidor at the Reservation on Tuesday for its next match.
