Locals may know Johnny Edson, a Beaumont native who is now an Austin singer and songwriter.“Driftwood,” a musical for broadcast and compact disc co-written by Johnny Edson, will premiere at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, on Lamar University public radio KVLU (91.3 FM). “Driftwood” is a collaboration by Edson and veteran Austin performer Herman Bennett, a Port Arthur native and Lamar graduate. They are among the 26 actors and musicians who perform on the CD.

Billed a “Gulf Coast musical for the mind,” “Driftwood” is a radio play that follows the format of 1940s radio programs, called a glimpse into the essence of Joe Boudreaux, a resident of the mythical Gulf Coast village of Stingaree Pass. Boudreaux mows lawns around Stingaree Pass and, when he revs the souped-up mower, it becomes his palette knife. He is a landscape artist, and the world — or at least his part of it — is his canvas. The musical-drama is set on a day when Boudreaux encounters an unpleasant memory but, by day’s end, is able to reconcile the past and rediscover contentment.
