Colleen Russell, director of planning for the city of Port Arthur said no contribution is ever too small when it comes to cleaning up the city.

The Valero Port Arthur Refinery donated four weedeaters to the One Block at a Time campaign Friday at Port Arthur City Hall. Terry Hamilton, coordinator with One Block at Time thanked Valero for being kind enough to donate the equipment.

“Our goal at One Block at a Time is to clean up and beautify the city,” Hamilton said. “We help homeowners paint, mow and trim trees. Some people are still recovering from Ike.”

Hamilton said he is out and about the city everyday, looking for new projects to do. One Block at a Time has 450 volunteers from Texas and Louisiana. In addition to needing weedeaters, the organization also needs chain saws, lawn mowers, extension saws, but predominately more volunteers.

Hamilton added his organization participates with the city’s beautification committee and the parks and recreation department in addition to faith-based organizations in beautifying the city.

Morris Carter Jr., health, safety and environmental director for the Valero Port Arthur Refinery said their company was proud to help in the city’s efforts.

“We support the One Block at a Time campaign. We’re honored to be a part of it,” Carter said.
