Five men, ranging in age from 18 to 23, were indicted by the Jefferson County Grand Jury for an aggravated robbery where the victim was shot multiple times while in the 3500 block of 15th Street.

The men include:

Silas Udolp McCall, also known as “Chu,”, 23, of 711 E. 17th St.

Kalup Tompkins Scott, 18, of 1829 10th St.

Andrew St. Clair Mercadel, also known as “Sonny,” 19, of Fm 3514, Beaumont.

Jamal Emile Joseph, 18, of 3919 Brinkman.

Ashford Reynaldo Chester, 18, of 3214 32nd St.

Warrants were issued in December 2008 for the arrest of the suspects in connection with the Dec. 8 shooting of Norman Berry, of Port Arthur. The victim was visiting a friends home on 15th Street when he was shot seven times in the home’s driveway.

Scott was picked up Dec. 30 and Mercadel was arrested Dec. 31 in Port Arthur. Chester was apprehended in Groves on Jan. 1 and McCall was taken into custody Jan. 6 at a Houston motel. Joseph was taken into custody Jan. 14 in Lake Charles.

An indictment is not a final conviction of guilt, it is only a ruling by the grand jury that allows the district attorney’s office to proceed with a criminal case.
