BEAUMONT — A Jefferson County man faces probation over the 2005 death of his horse after the animal was dragged behind his pickup.

Victor Guillory of Fannett pleaded guilty Monday in Beaumont to attempted cruelty to an animal, a Class A misdemeanor.

Prosecutors say the horse, named Bobby, was dragged more than two miles.

Guillory said he was trying to exercise the animal.

The 52-year-old Guillory must serve two years deferred adjudication, a form of probation, as part of the plea agreement. He also must pay a $1,000 fine and do 100 hours of community service with the Humane Society.

Defense attorney Mike Laird says Guillory is a nice, easy-going man who had an unfortunate accident that created a stir.

Two previous trials ended in mistrials. Guillory had been charged with animal cruelty.
